The Joy of Being an English Private Tutor: My Personal Experience

Being an English private tutor is an incredibly fulfilling and rewarding experience for me. It brings joy to both me and my students (It does…read on to find out why?)

1.Helping Students Achieve Their Goals

One of the most rewarding aspects of being an English private tutor is helping students achieve their goals. Whether they are trying to improve their grades, prepare for an important exam, or gain confidence in their English skills, being able to guide a student towards success is a wonderful feeling. Seeing students' progress over time can be incredibly motivating and rewarding. Some students have been with me since they were in Grade 1 and to watch them transform into confident learner’s is very rewarding.

2. Building Strong Relationships with Students

Tutoring allows for one-on-one interaction with students, leading to strong relationships and connections. This allows me to tailor my teaching style and approach to meet the individual needs of each student, which can lead to a more personal and effective learning experience. Building a relationship with a student can also make the learning process more enjoyable and engaging for both parties. I have been chided for not holding group sessions - that is off the table for me. I believe each child is unique and so are their needs.

3.Enhancing Your Own Teaching Skills

Tutoring has been an excellent opportunity for me to improve my teaching skills. Working with various students has allowed me to develop new strategies and techniques for teaching English, as well as improve my ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely. For that reason, I created an Etsy store to provide access to study material to the wider community of students. It has also allowed me to address a very big problem - spelling. I created an online spelling games on my site and also have created specialised spelling workbooks. These target a category of words ; family, days of the week, flowers and so on.

4. Sharing Your Love of Language and Culture

As an English tutor, I happily share my love for the English language and culture with my students. When we are reading comprehension passages or come across unusual words, we discuss its origin, talk about literature, history and other cultural aspects. I am often asked by my older students’ about new authors, poets, or cultural traditions and it broadens their perspectives and mine too! I sometimes have to research something too and then, we both have discovered something fascinating!

I love English tutoring and have no plans to stop anytime soon. I always tell parents that the grades will come later, let’s build a strong foundation.
